Scared

I am shocked and scared by yesterday's shooting at Viginia Tech campus. My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by yesterday's events. For those of you who may not have heard, 33 individuals were shot and killed with many more injured, yesterday, including the shooter.

When shootings like this occur on a university or college campus it makes me question my safety at work and school. The universities try to do all they can to give us security but still things like this happen.

I don't know what to tell you, Catie--I work in a high school that features video surveillance, cop cars and drug sniffing dogs. I've been threatened by the same kids that come back to me the next day seemingly happy to see me. (I once managed to convince my administration to give me intercom and phone service because I was the only one on campus who didn't hear the signal to participate in a lockdown drill. I told them that if a mad gunman stuck his head in my room and dropped me like a truckload of rotten squash, at least I didn't have to worry about that pesky panic thing.) You missed my panic blog where my kids came home all excited because one of their classmates brought a bomb to school. Guns and explosives are prevalent in America, and you don't have to like it (I personally don't like it at all. I am apparently in the broke minority.) but we keep trying to think of new and more ineffective ways of combatting the problem. Of course you're scared. We're all scared. Just know that you're not alone. (Also know that you live in Canada. I'm starting to think that nothing bad happens in Canada. I'm starting to expect you smarter people to put up a big plexiglas barrier and I'll be one of the only sane people in the US to be banging on it begging you to let me in...)

Sadly bad things do happen in Canada, although thankfully less frequently, and usually on a smaller scale. I think we all need to hold these events in our hearts and minds forever to remember why we need outreach services and gun control. After all you can have great security, but all it takes is one person to slip by to cause such mass devastation.

Catie--hey--I've got a small request... if you could post a note on the discussion forum for amazon.ca about the web site that would be SOOOOOOOO much help...I need to log in and get an account etc., and would rather not put my credit card in yet another place...

Let me know if you can--I would be supremely grateful!
